Commercial Trucking Insurance

Coverage options for owner-operators, new ventures, and small fleets — including liability, cargo and physical damage.

Having trouble finding trucking coverage? Explore hard-to-place options

Primary Auto Liability

Commercial auto liability coverage is typically required by the FMCSA for motor carriers operating in interstate commerce. It covers bodily injury and property damage to third parties resulting from the operation of covered commercial vehicles.

  • Required for most for-hire motor carriers operating in interstate commerce
  • Covers bodily injury and property damage to third parties
  • Minimum limits vary by cargo type and operation
  • Available for owner-operators and trucking companies

Non-Trucking Liability & Unladen Liability

Non-Trucking Liability

Liability coverage for qualifying personal, nonbusiness use of your truck. Driving without a trailer or without a load does not, by itself, make a trip eligible for non-trucking liability coverage.

Unladen Liability

Liability coverage for qualifying operation of your truck without a load, with or without an empty trailer. Depending on the policy, it may include certain business use or trips under dispatch that non-trucking liability excludes.

Your motor carrier's lease requirements and the way you use your truck help determine which coverage to discuss. We can review those requirements with you. Coverage depends on the policy's terms, exclusions, and underwriting.

  • Non-trucking liability: qualifying personal, nonbusiness use
  • Unladen liability: qualifying operation without a load
  • Unladen liability may include certain business use NTL excludes
  • Lease requirements and policy terms determine which coverage applies

Physical Damage

Physical damage coverage protects your trucks and trailers against direct physical loss or damage. Comprehensive coverage addresses non-collision events such as fire, theft, and weather. Collision coverage addresses damage from accidents.

  • Comprehensive coverage for non-collision events (fire, theft, weather, vandalism)
  • Collision coverage for accident-related damage
  • Options for eligible owned or leased trucks and trailers
  • Coverage subject to deductibles and underwriting

Motor Truck Cargo

Motor truck cargo insurance covers eligible freight or commodities being transported by for-hire motor carriers against covered loss or damage in transit. Not every commodity, theft scenario, or circumstance is covered — limits, commodity restrictions, and exclusions apply.

  • Covers eligible cargo transported by for-hire motor carriers
  • Covered loss or damage to freight in transit
  • Commodity restrictions, limits, and exclusions apply
  • May be required by shippers or brokers

General Liability

Helps protect your business against covered third-party bodily injury and property damage claims arising from business operations. Coverage depends on the policy and your activities.

  • Covered third-party bodily injury and property damage from business operations
  • May include personal and advertising injury coverage
  • Coverage depends on the policy and your specific activities
  • Available for trucking companies and owner-operators

Workers' Compensation

Workers' compensation coverage provides benefits to employees who sustain work-related injuries or illnesses. Requirements vary by state. We can assist trucking companies in understanding their obligations.

  • Covers work-related injuries and illnesses for employees
  • Requirements and benefits vary by state
  • May be required by state law for employers
  • Assists trucking companies in meeting state obligations

Occupational Accident

Occupational accident coverage provides benefits for work-related accidental injuries to eligible independent contractors. This coverage does not replace legally required workers' compensation insurance.

  • Accidental injury benefits for eligible independent contractors
  • Accidental death and dismemberment coverage
  • Temporary disability benefits
  • Does not replace workers' compensation where required by law

Trailer Interchange & Non-Owned Trailer Physical Damage

These coverages address physical damage to eligible non-owned trailers, with different agreement and policy requirements. Trailer interchange applies under a written interchange agreement; non-owned trailer physical damage addresses trailers in your care, custody, or control. Not every trailer in your possession is automatically insured.

  • Trailer interchange: physical damage under a written interchange agreement
  • Non-owned trailer: trailers in your care, custody, or control
  • Different agreement and policy requirements for each
  • Subject to underwriting and policy terms

Coverage is subject to carrier underwriting, policy terms, conditions, exclusions and availability. Not all coverages are available in all states. Submission of a quote request does not bind coverage or guarantee a policy offer.

Owner-Operators & Fleets

Coverage Review for Owner-Operators & Fleets

Whether you run one truck or manage a growing fleet, we can review your current coverage, upcoming renewal, and changes to your operation.

Owner-operators may work under their own authority or lease onto another motor carrier. Your insurance needs depend on that arrangement — a leased operator's coverage requirements are often set by the carrier's lease agreement, while an owner-operator with their own authority is responsible for meeting FMCSA minimums directly. We can review your lease requirements and discuss the appropriate options.

  • Current policy information and renewal date
  • Trucks, trailers, and drivers to be insured
  • Cargo hauled and operating area
  • Loss runs, if available
  • Lease or customer insurance requirements, if applicable

New Trucking Businesses

Starting a New Trucking Business?

New trucking businesses can discuss coverage based on their operation, drivers, vehicles, commodities, and authority status. Whether you are applying for authority, waiting for it to activate, or just getting started, we can review what you need and when you need it.

If you are also setting up your USDOT number, MC authority, or BOC-3 filing, we can assist with those steps as well. See our Authority & Compliance services for more information.
