Frequently Asked Questions
Opening or Expanding a CDL School in Nevada?
Nevada DMV licenses CDL and truck driving schools through its Driver Education and Training program. The checklist below covers the main requirements for school owners. This guidance applies to Nevada-licensed schools; requirements vary in other states.
Nevada CDL School Licensing — Key Requirements
School licensing and business location
The school must hold a Nevada DMV driving school license. Requirements include a physical business location, signage, and a designated manager. Review OBL-278 for the complete list of supporting documents required with the application.
Instructor licensing and qualifications
Each instructor must hold a Nevada DMV driving instructor license. Requirements include a background check, driving record review, and minimum experience standards. Review OBL-279 for application requirements and qualifications.
Required bond and insurance documentation
Nevada requires a $10,000 school bond (OBL-277) and automobile-liability documentation for behind-the-wheel instruction. The bond amount is not the premium — the premium is a fraction of the bond amount. The bond and liability insurance are separate requirements.
Training vehicles and inspections
Training vehicles must meet DMV inspection requirements. Use OBL-320 for the official vehicle inspection form. Vehicles must be properly insured and registered.
Curriculum and federal ELDT requirements
CDL training schools that provide entry-level driver training (ELDT) must be listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR). Nevada's OBL-339 covers curriculum requirements for the training your school provides. Federal ELDT requirements and Nevada licensing are separate — a school must satisfy both.
Nevada may refuse to accept training results from an unlicensed school. State licensing and FMCSA TPR listing are separate requirements — a school must satisfy both independently. Being listed on the TPR does not mean the school is "FMCSA approved" or "FMCSA certified"; the TPR is a registry of providers that have self-certified compliance with ELDT requirements.
